week ending

MAY 25

Last week we had four #1's on two charts. This week there are only three #1's, two of them being singles, and brand new ones at that! Congratulations to Canada's Kiwi Jr. with "Night Vision" from their just-announced third album Chopper and to England's Sports Team with "The Game" from their forthcoming second record GULP!.

On the album front, alternative vets The Afghan Whigs take the top spot with How Do You Burn?, their upcoming ninth record, and first in five years. At #2 are Idaho's biggest non-potato export, Built To Spill with the forthcoming When The Wind Forgets Your Name. There are three tied at #3 - A Bit of Previous from Belle and Sebastian, If I Never Know You Like This Again from SOAK, and Weird Nightmare's self-titled debut. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever kick off the second half of the top ten with Endless Rooms at #6. There's another tie at #7 between upcoming releases from Automatic (Excess) and Interpol (The Other Side of Make-Believe). Last week's top album, We've Been Going About This All Wrong from Sharon Van Etten is tied this week to close out the top ten at #9 with Porridge Radio's wordy Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder To The Sky.

Jumping back to singles, there's a debut from Sylvan Esso, "Sunburn," at #3, followed by Starcrawler at #4 with "Roadkill." A tie at #5 find's "The Getaway" off the week's #1 album by The Afghan Whigs alongside "Roman Candles" from Death Cab For Cutie. A song named for Christian Bale's most evil pre-Gorr, The God Butcher role, "Patrick Bateman," from Canadians Housewife debuts at #7, followed by Horsegirl, "Dirtbag Transformation," at #8, and a long-awaited new song from Santigold (YAY!), "High Priestess," at #9. That leaves three tracks, tied at #10 - "Topo Ride The Wave" from Cayucas, "Passion" from Roosevelt with Nile Rodgers, and "Swear Jar" from SOAK.
